Why can't we use 100% of our brains?

There’s absolutely no truth to the idea that we only use 10% of our neural matter.

The Battle In Your Brain

It’s true that increased connectivity between neurons is associated with greater ability. Studies have shown that musicians, who play stringed instruments, have larger areas of their brains dedicated to their active hands. Brain scans of London taxi drivers have revealed that the more years a driver has on the job correlates to a larger portion of their brain being recruited to store spatial information.

These findings demonstrate Hebb’s law: neurons that fire together wire together and neuroplasticity, the ability of the brain to change its physical structure and function based on repeated experience, behavior, and thoughts. In the blog, The Battle In Your Brain, I write:

Every minute of every day there’s a battle going on in your brain — a battle for cortical real estate. Your experiences, behaviours, emotions, and even your thoughts are constantly, literally changing and shaping your brain.

You have a use or lose it brain. Any unused connections go dormant to free up resources needed to strengthen those connections that are most often used. Neuroplasticity is competitive, and functioning areas of the brain not receiving any stimuli will be quickly taken over. In experiments where participants were blindfolded, their visual cortices started reorganising themselves to process sound in just two days!

You Already Use 100% Of Your Brain

Brain scans show activity coursing through your entire brain all the time, even at rest and during sleep. Not all 86 billion neurons are firing at once, of course, but they do exist in a constant state of resting potential, electrically charged, ready to act when needed.

An article in Scientific America, “Do People Only Use 10% Of Their Brains,” explains:

‘Evidence would show over a day you use 100 percent of the brain,’ says John Henley, a neurologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Even in sleep, areas such as the frontal cortex, which controls things like higher level thinking and self-awareness, or the somatosensory areas, which help people sense their surroundings, are active, Henley explains. ….'[I]t turns out though, that we use virtually every part of the brain, and that [most of] the brain is active almost all the time’

Your Brain Is An Energy Hog

Your brain is incredibly hungry and requires a huge amount of energy just to keep running. The human adult brain makes up about only 2% of the body’s mass yet uses 20% of energy intake. In children, the brain eats up 50% of daily glucose intake, and infant’s brains take a whopping 60%.

Brain sizes scale in proportion to body size with larger animals having larger brains, but on a per weight basis, humans pack in more neurons than any other species. This density is what makes us so smart. It takes an awful lot of fuel to power that complex brain, and there’s a trade off between body size and sustainable number of neurons. According to the Ted-Ed Animation, “A 25 kilogram ape has to eat 8 hours a day to uphold a brain with 53 billion neurons.”

The invention of cooking food gave humans the means to power their growing brains because our guts could more easily absorb energy from cooked food.

Our brains also adapted by learning to become incredibly energy efficient. At any one time, only a small proportion of brain cells are signaling, a process known as “sparse coding”, allowing the brain to use the least amount of energy while transferring the most information. The need to conserve energy resources is the reason that most brain processes happen below conscious awareness and that multitasking just doesn’t work. There’s not enough energy available to the brain to focus on more than one thing at a time.

The energy burden of maintaining an activation spike over the entire brain at once would be unsustainable. So, using the brain at full capacity all the time, like depicted at the end of the movie, would be impossible. A person simply could not supply the necessary fuel.

Smart Drugs

Another movie, Limitless, portrayed a disheveled writer who cleaned up his life and at the bank when he discovered and became addicted to a cognitive enhancing “smart drug.” While some neuroenhancers or nootropics do actually exist today, a wonder drug as portrayed in both movies has yet to be discovered.

In a BBC News article, Professor John Harris, director of the Institute for Science, Ethics, and Innovation at The University of Manchester, says smart drugs can give people an edge, but:

They have a similar effect to hard work and coffee. Physical exercise also has the same effect. They are all, to an extent, cognitive enhancers. If you’re not a genius before, you won’t be afterward.

The Scientific America article concludes by saying,

Ultimately, it’s not that we use 10 percent of our brains, merely that we only understand about 10 percent of how it functions.

Why call turkeys turkey?

It’s a tiny bit more complex than Egehan and Ozgur have already written… because the “turkey” most of us think of nowadays doesn’t even come from India, but actually originated in the Americas, where they were domesticated by the Mayans by 800 BC!

Wikipedia’s article on the turkey has some different theories as to why the turkey got this English name (and indeed, why it got the Turkish name) given that before Europeans reached the Americas, no one in Europe, Turkey or India had ever laid eyes on this particular bird.

One pretty plausible explanation is that European explorers who thought they were sailing west to India already knew about species that had been brought over land from India, and simply confused the American turkey with other game birds of the same order (Galliformes) that they’d been exposed to before, like various species of Guinea Fowl.

There is a certain resemblance between the two species – they are both, as the Wikipedia article for Galliformes notes, “heavy-bodied ground-feeding birds.” Better known as good eatin’!

So, stumbling upon a flock of wild turkeys in the Americas, the typical confused European might think that not only had they reached India, but the Indians had been holding out on them – these birds were easily three times the weight of the Guinea Fowl – or “Turkey coqs” imported through Istanbul – they were used to! And they didn’t even taste as gamy.

Another possibility is that the explorers loaded up their ships in Latin America and dropped off some turkeys in the Middle East, where people domesticated them and started exporting them to Europe.

The Hindi name – similar to words in a lot of other languages – appears to arise from confused Europeans thinking that they had reached India.

Which is better, an entrepreneur or a job with a company?

Thanks for the Question Rahil,

Well I can say, one can consider it as a journey from Job to Business. Both things have its own importance, No company can run without manpower and none can become entrepreneur without people.

So if one start his journey from the ground, means being an employee first, he can greatly take care of his employees in future when s(he) start own company.

Take care of your employee and employee will take care of your company. To know this rule one can be in employees position for some years.

Hope this helps you,

How is a conglomerate different from a consortium?

Conglomerate – different businesses and different industries.. conglomerate is headed by single person.. ck birla group is a conglomerate, headed by Shri. CK Birla

Consortium – it is putting a conglomerate into one single business or to achieve common goal of the conglomerate. Consortium is like different headed companies, groups, even associations, some government groups too comes to together to achieve a common goal

Why do people always tell me I will do great things? I know I am intelligent, but I have never really done anything exceptional. Is there something I am missing? I am 27.

If people are ALWAYS telling you this than there is something to it. If it was just your mom than maybe not so much 🙂 This is an expression of kindness and admiration in most cases. They are telling you this because they see true potential in you. They see that you are smart and have done some things that they probably have not however trivial you think they are. These individuals are watching and thinking wow, you are a special person. If you evaluate yourself compared to your friends and family you may find some things that stick it in comparison and know why they are saying this. They must be there because others see it and you don’t. Figure out what that special “IT” is. It is great to be modest but it is even better to know your talents, skills and use them to do something great.

What should be the diet during exams?

Avoid oily foods and sweets which make you sluggish. Also avoid mutton and too much spicy foods. Eat as much fruits as you can and have butter milk after lunch and dinner; by doing so you can avoid indigestion/uneasiness of stomach . Have some light physical activity by which the hormone endorphin is released which elevates your mood and it also reduces cortisol hormones which create stress. Meditating and doing pranayama is an added advantage which helps you in concentrating better and have good memory. If you wish you can take one multivitamin tablet preferably Supradyn and one Limcee 500 mg (vitamin C chewable). As you have not mentioned your age, please take advice from a medical professional for taking these tablets.

Some useful tips during studying are:

Study for 45 mins, take a break of 5–7 mins during which time take a deep breath (inhale and exhale) several times and resume studying, more importantly make a timetable of your own and stick to it strictly.

All the best!!!

Would you agree that a large number of airport officials in Indonesia don't speak English?

Count the proportion of English speaking passengers vs the proportion of Indonesian speaking passengers.
If there are *enough* airport officials that speak English (or Japanese, Chinese, Hindi, Arab — insert other languages here) to cope with the demand, and if needed there is an English speaker on call somewhere, why should it matter?

English is not the only language in the world, it’s a useful fallback, but you can’t count on everybody speaking it.

Will Catalonia have to reapply to join the EU when they split from Spain?

In principle yes. But given how new this situation is to the EU, we never know what to expect.

If Catalonia splits from Spain, chances are that either Spain will agree, or there is huge international support for the move. Both cases would be completely new for the EU. The EU has never faced a situation like that.

If Spain agrees with the split, it would be likely that there would be a transition period, and the application period could be done before the split is complete.

If Spain doesn’t agree, but there is huge international support for it. It would only work if that support is either from EU countries, or a world super power is willing to go all in against Spain (USA/China/Russia). It is hard to foresee a situation like this and all the possible ramifications. But in either case, the EU would be transformed into something new.

So far, this scenario looks implausible. As Catalonia doesn’t have neither Spanish nor international support for its independence.
