  1. In Psychology, you need to study the mind and behavior. It seizes all the facets of unconscious, sub-conscious and conscious experiences and thoughts. Basically, in its study you learn to investigate the Human mind and how it influences our actions.

The two books that I personally feel, are good to start as an introduction to this field are:

    1. Rod Plotnik and Haig Kouyoumdjian’s Introduction to Psychology.

    2. James W. Kalat’s Introduction to Psychology.

If you want more books to be more confident, then you can refer to

    I hope this helps you.
    All the best!! 🙂

    Thank you for the A2A.

  2. My brother is a Ph.D. psychologist who, over the course of his studies and his career has recommended a number of books and authors to me. One author who made an impression on me and whose books I dove into and really benefited from was a woman named Karen Horney. She was Freud’s eighth student and first female student.

I recommend everything she has written. I own The Neurotic Personality of Our Time, Our Inner Conflicts (extremely helpful for laying out some self-understanding) and the capstone, Neurosis and Human Growth: The Struggle Toward Self-Realization.

Another psychologist whose work I found meaningful is Paul Tournier. He is Swiss.

Some day my brother may get around to writing his books. He has some keen insights but he is also very giving and lives sacrificially helping others. We’ll see what happens.

A contemporary psychologist who has written a number of good books is Martin Seligman. My brother once spoke at a conference in which Dr. Seligman was also a speaker. I found some things in his booked Learned Optimism exceedingly helpful. He has also written some other books about happiness and well-being.

Hope you find some useful direction in these and the recommendations of others.

  4. If you are interested in audio book , i would like to suggest you one great audio book, that could change your life in 4 weeks, if you follow instructions and exercises. We should be ready with open and clear mind to be transformed. This is a home study training program and not a course on motivation , not a course on positive thinking, this is something beyond that. This program is designed to awaken your inner power and it must be awakened, must be used and developed. Good Luck.

  5. I’ve no idea about academic psychology, but as far as popular psychology goes, I can suggest the following books:

You Are Not So Smart: Why You Have Too Many Friends on Facebook, Why Your Memory Is Mostly Fiction, and 46 Other Ways You're Deluding Yourself & You Are Now Less Dumb: How to Conquer Mob Mentality, How to Buy Happiness, and All the Other Ways to Outsmart Yourself by David McRaney

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business by Charles Duhigg

Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us by Daniel H. Pink

Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion by Robert B. Cialdini

Then, you may choose to read slightly heavier books like

Thinking, Fast and Slow by Daniel Kahneman

Fooled by Randomness: The Hidden Role of Chance in Life and in the Markets & The Black Swan: The Impact of the Highly Improbable by Nassim Nicholas Taleb

  6. Psychology is fairly very very innovative and interesting subject! But I'll be honet and say that, in beginning it can be very tricky as it changes our age long meanings of term. (Best example: Attitude!).

Also it can be slightly boring and complex at first with all the technical words!

But if you are beginner, I will suggest you two books.

General psychology and social psychology. These both books of the author ‘Robert A. Baron'.

I hope you enjoy studying this subject. Good luck :))

  7. Thinking Fast and Slow, by Daniel Kahneman, 2011 – If you want to understand how people think and how and why they react, then this is a must read. Daniel Kahneman is a Psychologist and a Nobel prize winner in Economics, but this book is all about how people think and react. It’s very well written, but I will warn you, it’s not an easy read. Plan to spend time reading this one. But it will be worth it for the understanding you get into why we do the things we do

  8. The 80/20 Principle by Richard Koch. The principle literally means that 80% of your success in life comes from only 20% of what you do in life. Hence, everything is not created equal and identifying what aids in your success in life the most can be hugely beneficial. Applying this principle in your life may result in increased efficiency because you would not be wasting time and energy on things that do not matter as much to your results.

This is a very non-intuitive concept and somewhat paradoxical, but a lot of things in life are that way. But if you start embracing this concept, then your life will be enhanced.

  9. Well, if you want to learn the basics in Psychology, you should start with Class 11th and 12th NCERT books of Psychology.

To go into details about general psychology the following books would suffice :

    • Psychology: The Science of Mind and Behavior by Passer and Smith
    • Psychology by Ciccarelli
    • Introduction to Psychology by Morgan and King

However, Psychology by Ciccarelli is more easy to read since important concepts are written in separate boxes. The other two books have detailed accounts of specific concepts.

  10. I'd personally recommend The Power of Now by Echkart Tolle, which helped me a lot. This book is excellent at explaining your own psychology, and goes deeper than other books on your own psychology.

    Other books include:

7 habits of highly efective people – by Stephen Covey

The Definitive Book of Body Language – by Barbara Pease

Man's Search for Meaning – by Viktor Frankl

Thinking Fast and Slow – by Daniel Kahneman

    Redirect – by Timothy Wilson

    Drive – by Daniel Pink

The Invisible Gorilla – by Chabris and Simon

    Good Luck!

  11. 1. The Social Animal

    Influence: Science and Practice

Yes! 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to be Persuasive

Observation of the environment , the person , his body language , face expression , eyes . It's sometimes like detective things but these help you to get to know the person's situation well . It is not about the mysticism of the religion, if that concerns you. The book is Why Buddhism is True: The Science and Philosophy of meditation and Enlightenment by Robert Wright. Very interesting stuff!
