Acting: When taking head shots with a photographer is $735 Canadian over priced for 4 large prints and 100 composite cards along with having a makeup artist?

I have never paid that for headshots, and I've always walked away with a complete disk of ALL shots taken with a a selection of photographer picked proofs.

In the NYC/LA markets, the prices vary wildly, as does the talent and experience of the photographer. Shop around! Ask other actors for their recommendations! Personally, that seems grossly overpriced to me. However, I'm not super familiar with the Canadian market. Where exactly in Canada are you? Toronto or Vancouver?

Personally, I have always had great luck going to the film and art schools. The students are VERY willing to do an afternoon photo shoot for a very small amount of money if not for free. Sometimes, just some beer will get you there! Typically, the trade-off is allowing them to use your image in their portfolio. The shoots are usually a ton of fun and because they are so invested in their art, the pictures generally turn out quite wonderfully! It's a route I highly recommend if your time frame is a bit on the flexible side.

If not, I'd definitely question the value of the headshot package you were quoted. Definitely check with actors, agents, casting directors, and the unions in your area to see if they have any recommendations. They often have a list of available photographers, at the very least, which is a good starting point.

  1. It's only over priced if they aren't good pictures. As far as it being competitively priced, you should ask around. There is no 'standard" for headshot prices.. so its a competitive market. If he is good, he can ask what he wants.. if someone charges 50.00 bucks and they are horrible pictures is it worth it ? Shop around. Find a photographer you are comfortable with. If I had the money, Id pay for Annie Leibovitz… 😉
