Why do guys feel weak after sex?

Both males and females can get sleepy after sex. They can't help it. It's the chemicals released after orgasm.

There are set of specific reasons as to why this tiredness occurs. In most cases it is a combination of exerting a lot of physical energy during sex as well as the chemicals that are released when the act is complete and orgasm is achieved.

"Then there is the biochemistry of the orgasm itself. Research shows that during ejaculation, men release a cocktail of brain chemicals, including norepinephrine, serotonin, oxytocin, vasopressin, nitric oxide (NO), and thehormone prolactin. The release of prolactin is linked to the feeling of sexual satisfaction, and it also mediates the “recovery time” that men are well aware of—the time a guy must wait before “giving it another go.” Studies have also shown that men deficient in prolactin has faster recovery times.

"Prolactin levels are naturally higher during sleep, and animals injected with the chemical become tired immediately. This suggests a strong link between prolactin and sleep, so it’s likely that the hormone’s release during orgasm causes men to feel sleepy.

(Side note: prolactin also explains why men are sleepier after intercourse than after masturbation. For unknown reasons, intercourse orgasms release four times more prolactin than masturbatory orgasms, according to a recent study.)

"Oxytocin and vasopressin, two other chemicals released during orgasm, are also associated with sleep. Their release frequently accompanies that of melatonin, the primary hormone that regulates our body clocks. Oxytocin is also thought to reduce stress levels, which again could lead to relaxation and sleepiness."

In human sexuality, the refractory period is usually the recovery phase after orgasm during which it is physiologically impossible for a man to have additional orgasms. Though it is generally reported that women do not experience a refractory period and thus can experience an additional orgasm, or multiple orgasms, soon after the first, some sources state that both men and women experience a refractory period because women may also experience a period after orgasm in which further sexual stimulation does not produce excitement. 1. After you have sex, your brain secretes prolactin, which is what causes you to become drowsy, and is also responsible for the refractory period after sex. The refractory period is the time it takes for a man to have an erection again after ejaculation. For some it’s a few hours, for others it can be a day.

A measure of how much you enjoyed the sex that you just had is from how much prolactin your body releases. When you have sex that isn’t very satisfying, your brain secretes less prolaction. When it’s the best sex ever, you’re also more drowsy and weak afterwards.

This, along with the physical activity that sex involves, is what makes you feel so weak after sex.

Men and women both produce prolactin, but it has a slightly different effect on men vs women. Women are naturally a bit more immune to prolactin’s effects as their body is genetically programmed for it. It is the hormone that causes women’s breasts to produce milk. So while both sexes become weak after sex, prolactin has a stronger effect on men.

Something else that increases prolactin levels is steam inhalation. Which is why most people feel relaxed after a shower. It is common for men to experience softer erections immediately after a shower, and a hard time maintaining one as well. A shower pretty much mirrors the refractory period that follows after sex.

The longer your shower is, the more “like sex” it will feel.

  2. This is why he falls asleep after sex

Sex acts as a sleeping pill

When we get an orgasm, the endorphins and so-called love hormone release oxitocyn, which has the effect that our brain is in sleep mode. Sex is a pretty powerful activation of the entire body, and therefore you get a powerful endorphine rush just afterwards.

After this rush you are usually relaxed and sleepy, especially if it’s late at night. In addition to all endorphins, sex also leads to the secretion of the hormone prolactin, which makes us cheerful and tuned for proximity – and this has more ladies than men.

Prolactin helps us to associate with the one we’ve just had sex with, which is smartly pure propagation. Ladies have more of this than men, so while the ladies want to chat after sex, the men know that they would rather just sleep.

  3. Reason 1: Sex is physically exhausting…most guys are so over-the-moon that someone actually wants to have sex with them, that they'll usually jump through hoops to please (well, maybe that's just me!!)

Reason 2: Sex often happens in bed at night…it's only normal to go to sleep after…

Reason 3: A number of chemicals are released when a man reaches orgasm – these chemicals can make one drowsy..
