Is the downvote-answer feature necessary on Quora?

Yes.  Without downvoting, I think you open Quora up to non-constructive answers which weaken the strength of the site. See What are good and bad reasons to downvote answers on Quora? That question has a number of answers that get at this point. That question and its answers also support the secondary point that Justin Bishop is making — which I agree with — that unfair/unreasonable downvoting is demoralizing.

What is the difference between sending "Thanks" and agreeing with/upvoting an answer on Quora? These features seem kind of similar.

This might change as we keep working on Quora.  This has changed a little bit since I originally answered this question.

In general, voting for an answer means "People should look at this answer."  Thanks is a show of appreciation but doesn't make any statement about how good the answer is.

Some examples of where sending thanks might make sense but voting for an answer doesn't:

  • If someone gives a factual answer to a question, and you aren't sure if that answer is correct.
  • If a question is subjective and you disagree with the answer the person gave and so you don't want to vote for the answer but you appreciate the effort he/she put into writing it.

Concretely, upvoting an answer makes a public statement that you think people should read it, increases the number displayed next to the answer, and can move the answer up in the order that answers are displayed on a question.  It also makes it more likely that others–especially those that follow you–will see the question on their homepage feeds.  Sending thanks is currently an action that is strictly private and doesn't impact distribution or ranking of the answer.

What answer on Quora has the most anon votes?

lets assume that one day they completed it and it was very successful, do you realize that is a good thing.  quora has intelligent, clever, witty, people who actually can influence other people and helpful people who are not angry even about silly questions and answer them sarcastically. If it starts on FB, people on quora will still be using quora for its QUALITY, and the idiots will be posting on Q&A on Facebook πŸ™‚

What answers on Quora have the largest number of upvotes while being collapsed?

Just came across Ratan Guha's answer to What has been the greatest comeback in history? with a whopping 6.6k upvotes:

I don't see how it violates image policy though, or maybe the author has edited his image but Quora moderation hasn't noticed yet.

Ah just found out what the image that "violated Quora image policy" was:

…I don't get it. That's just a picture of Chanakya and his name, maybe they found the non English text in violation of Quora's "ENGLISH ONLY" policy?

Is it true that the more you vote up people's answers, the more people will feel obligated to vote up your answers?

There are two types of contexts that your suggested strategy applies to:

  1. When the two people involved are ones who have answered the same question: (lets call the two people Batman and Superman). In that case, Batman would have an incentive to vote up Superman's answer so that Superman feels obliged to vote up Batman's (and vice-versa). Using such a strategy, you can atmost get as many upvotes as the number of answers to the question (minus one). For most questions, this will not get you very far. Most of the excellent answer's get up-votes from followers of the questions who have not written any answers (and people not following the question). So from Quora's point of view, the best answers still reach the top. No worries there.
  2. When the two people involved are both following each other: So assume Batman and Superman follow each other, and Batman upvotes Superman's answers in the hope that Superman will upvote his answers in return (and vice versa). Again, using this strategy, you can atmost get as many upvotes as the number of bi-directional followers[1] you have. Now we get two cases:

    (i) You have very few bi-directional followers, so this strategy doesn't work for you. This is true for most people who are new to Quora. In this case, you have to write good answers to get upvotes, as the upvotes would mostly come from strangers.

(ii) You have a lot of bi-directional followers. This case can be split again into two parts:
(ii).(a) You are a celebrity [2], i.e you have a lot of followers and you also tend to follow back quite a few people (but usually the number of people you follow is much less than the number of people who follow you). This is not a problem for Quora, because to reach celebrity status, you have to write good answers.

(ii).(b) You have lots of friends on Quora. I assume this case is probably quite rare on Quora, but can happen. Even if it happens, for the upvoting strategy to work, the assumption is that all your friends believe in the same strategy (i.e. upvoting somebody's answer obliges them to upvote your answers). It would be rare to find large cliques of such people, so Quora is probably fine for this case too.

Conclusion: For most people, writing good answers is the only way to get upvotes. The only pathological case would be when you have lots of friends on Quora who are all so obliged to vote your answers back without regard for their quality. This would be rare (especially as the clique size gets larger). So hopefully such social dynamics do not affect the Quora voting system.

[1] Bi-directional follower: Somebody whom you follow, and they follow you back. Just like a friendship on Facebook.
[2] Celebrity: Somebody with a lot of followers (for e.g. like Charlie Cheever, Marc Bodnick etc.)

p.s. Have I missed any other cases? Let me know!

Should Quora show you a notification when someone downvotes one of your answers?

I fear that notification of down-votes would become a problem, because it would then lead to the other question related to this one — people being identified for down-voting. The combo of logging in and seeing not only that you got three down-votes today AND the names of the people who did it, in my opinion, would diminish your experience and enjoyment of Quora, and would end up causing a lot of animosity and tit-for-tat among some users. Not everyone would do such a thing, and many would be motivated like Quora User and Quora User to use down-votes to improve their answers and ensure their posts are of high quality. But a lot more people, I fear, would instead simply fixate on feeling upset they were down-voted and then look up the people who down-voted the answers, take it personally, etc.

I'd also say that, aside from the reasoning given by Jessica and Mac, what other really good reason is there to even care about the down-voting and who did it?  If a user's primary motivation is counting up- and down-votes and to try to "win" questions with their answers, then I personally feel that's kind of an ulterior motive of sorts rather than being motivated to participate for the purpose of giving good information and contributing to the community as a whole here.

Ultimately, consider this — right now, we all find out when someone liked something we wrote, while lack of up-votes is a "neutral" message that your answer didn't garner specific attention. I think Quora and its users are better served with that existing situation, and that we are all better off if we are answering to try to help one another and to improve the flow of information — because that ends up demonstrating to us that what's good for the community is also what's best for us, because the feedback for our own questions is better and our overall experience and interactions are driven by positive feedback and motivation, rather than negativity and diversion of attention toward interpersonal arguments etc.

UPDATE/EDIT:  I have a compromise suggestion that at least some folks might be more willing to consider, in light of some of the good points made about why it would be helpful to at least find out if answers get collapsed.

What if the answer pages were designed so that after the first, say, top 10 answers, there was a "more" feature to unveil additional answers, and so on, so that downvoting didn't "collapse" an answer, but merely moved it farther down to "page 2" or "page 3" etc? Then, the only actual "collapses" could be when an answer is deemed not helpful enough or removed by an admin/mod etc, and THAT could generate a notification when in those rare cases an answer was really removed due to problems that have to be fixed in the answer.

I think there's a psychological component to people's aversion to downvoting, in that it can lead to collapsed answers. But if your answers didn't collapse, and were merely ordered up or down based purely on votes, it would be less upsetting, while still allowing Quora to achieve the duel goals of (a) prominently highlighting the top answers, and (b) keeping page loading simpler and faster and less initially "full."  The latter is of course an important issue, whether we users like it or not, and SOMEthing is necessary to deal with that situation. It's why most comment sections on sites everywhere will have things spread out over multiple pages, instead of one massive long stream of everything every single person has posted.

Consider: Why aren't people insisting that all comments instantly and automatically load for full visibility on every single answer, too? We accept that we're expected to click the "comments" button to see those, and there's no widespread argument that it's unfair or hiding content etc. So I think that breaking up the answers into multiple pages is likewise entirely rational and fair, avoids the "collapsed" stigma, and in fact helps the pages load faster, too. Then, it also allows for a possible compromise on showing notifications when you DO get collapsed for specific moderation reasons.

What are the most upvoted answers on Quora?

I wrote a script to find the most upvoted Quora answers, how quickly they're gaining votes, and some fun facts about them.

I AM CURRENTLY UNABLE TO UPDATE THIS LIST due to changes to Quora and the prohibition of Quorabot. Sorry.

On maintaining this list

When I started, there were only a few answers with more than 1,000 upvotes. Now there are well over a hundred, and it's likely I'm missing some out. Quora doesn't provide access to their data, so everything here is gathered by my efforts (and that of my software) – we sample Top Writers feeds and many popular blogs to find and track new answers. If you see something is missing, please leave a comment below.

On the value of upvotes

The Backstreet Boys have sold more than Bruce Springsteen; that doesn't necessarily make them better. And so it is with upvotes. Bear in mind:

  • Older answers are favoured – they've been around longer to gain votes. The top answer, for example, still gains an average of 60 votes / day.
  • Quora's Valley era – from what I can tell, Quora enjoyed an early period of explosive growth where half of Silicon Valley signed up for it. The most popular users reveal the trend – like Robert Scoble (journalist) (40k+ followers), Evan Williams (30k+ followers) and Kevin Rose (30k+ followers) – and so there's an understandable bias towards tech answers. This appears to be fading however.
  • India's ascent – since 2013, there's a notable increase in answers specific to India (where most of Quora's new users appear to be coming from). You can easily see this in the results above.

There's a lot of incredible content in this list. Looking into the quirkiness, the range, the effort and the wit within, I like to think of it as a microcosm of Quora as a whole.

Why should or shouldn't users who have answered a question on Quora be allowed to vote down other answers to the same question?

Opinion:  if people who spend time worrying about upvotes and downvotes would instead spend time writing answers, they'd get so many upvotes that they wouldn't be able to keep track of them all.

The OP's downvote counts for more.  If an answer gets collapsed, take it to the Court of Popular Downvote Appeal blog, and maybe people will comment and help you understand why it was collapsed.

Other writers are rarely attentive enough to collapse a decent answer, as long as the OP hasn't created the first downvote.

Quora built the system.  It works, mostly.

People who write answers are in the BEST position to know whether other answers are reasonably good or not.  If we couldn't downvote answers we know to be less-than-informative, Quora would be loaded with bad stuff.

Is it OK to upvote an answer if I have zero relevant domain expertise and therefore have no idea if the answer is correct?

How do users on Quora feel when their answers get voted down?

I love it.

It is too bad others don't feel the same.  Mistakes are our friend.  It is how we learn and how we grow.  If we got upvoted all the time, we'd go through life thinking there is no room for improvement.  The downvote, to me, represents a friendly, anonymous nudge that "you can do better."

I don't think I've gotten too many downvotes, but do remember the first one I received.

I'll share.

Q:  Where did I leave my keys?

I thought to myself what a moronic question?  I think I'll provide an answer of equal quality.

My answer was short and curt and meant to insinuate how stupid I thought the question was.

So, I responded…

A:  They are exactly where you left them.

Technically, I gave a perfectly correct answer.  As I later glanced at the other answers, I noticed mine got downvoted!  Boohoo.  How can the technically correct be at the bottom?  I reflected on the moment and it did not take me long to realize that I made a mistake in thinking how stupid the question was.  I contemplated the seriousness of the question for a bit and decided it was, in fact, a fair question.  Had I missed something in the first viewing?  Was I in a bad mood?  I can't be certain what happened.

What I do know what happened was that the downvote caused me to retrace my steps and allowed me the privilege of seeing the self-admitted error in my actions.  I contemplated how that smart ass answer would be a reflection upon me to everyone that read it and how extremely unhelpful it was.  I quickly deleted it.

Perhaps it's unusual that I view it as a learning and self improvement opportunity and use it as a reminder that I can do better.
